Asus New Zenfone 3s Max

Another day, another ZenFone 3 variant from ASUS. This time, it’s the ZenFone 3s Max (notice the little “s” there), and it’s officially available beginning next week. [Updated with official price]

If it seems like an incremental upgrade over the original 5.2-inch ZenFone 3 Max (ZC520TL) based on the model name, well, it depends. The ZenFone 3s Max (also called the ZC521TL) owns an almost entirely different physical design, with the fingerprint scanner moved to the home button below the display and the rear camera relocated to the corner.

Based on the pictures, you can barely tell if it branches off from the ZenFone 3 family, but it’s certainly part of the Max series. Thanks to the boosted 5000mAh battery, it’ll last even longer than the already beefed-up 4100mAh capacity of its predecessor.

The other significant change is the slightly faster MediaTek MT6750 chipset. Coupled with 3GB of memory and updated Android 7.0 Nougat (finally!) interface, the ZenFone 3s Max is impressive for an entry-level handset.

There’s also a marginally better 8-megapixel selfie camera on board (compared to the original’s 5-megapixel shooter), plus a dual-LED flash now installed at the back. The newer model is a bit thicker and heavier, but only by 0.3mm and 27g, respectively. Every other specification matches that of the original ZenFone 3 Max.

India will see its launch happening on February 7. It’s only then when we’ll find out the official price.

Update: The ASUS ZenFone 3s Max is now available for INR 14,999 or roughly $222. Availability outside of India hasn’t been made official yet.

Best of Mobile World Congress 2017

Before the exhibition doors of Mobile World Congress open to the public, for most journalists, half the job is already done.

48 hours prior, my team and I had scuttled across the beautiful Mediterranean city hopping from one launch event to another.

We were at a total of 8 during this year’s show, overall one of the best in recent years.

Credit Samsung if you will. Them pushing back the Galaxy S8 launch to later in March, allowed other brands to collectively bask in the spotlight it once monopolized. Credit Nokia for its nostalgia-fueled comeback. Or credit every other smartphone brand that stepped it up and gave us, not only something to talk about, but also more wows than disappointment.

If MWC 2017 is any indication of what the rest of the year will look like in terms of smartphones. We’re pretty darn excited!

BlackBerry KEYOne

After a 2 year absence, BlackBerry is back!

This time via a life line from Chinese tech company TCL (also known for its midrange TVs and Alcatel smartphones).

The KEYOne is only the second BlackBerry phone to run Android and is perfect for those wanting both a 2017 smartphone experience and the familiarity of the full keypad BlackBerry is known for.

In the short time we spent with the KEYOne it felt like exactly what you’d expect from a BlackBerry – metal frame, rubber back, and that keypad from which it gets its name. The new, old keypad doubles as a touchpad and comes with a fingerprint sensor built into its space bar.

LG G6

While LG has pulled the plug on its modular smartphone concept, the new G6 leaves plenty more to be excited about.

LG’s biggest talking point is big screen, small phone. And while size is relative, you’ve got to hand it to them, despite having 0.2 inches more screen real estate than the iPhone 7 Plus, the G6 is indeed a much smaller phone that fits in the hand better.

What I like most about the G6 is its design. The phone is solidly built, much more than last year’s model. It’s a difference you can see and feel. And I’m lusting over the ice platinum one as I write this piece.

LG’s made sure the G6 satisfies by all accounts. It’s got a beautiful display, water and dust resistance, and a great camera. LG also says its given the G6 a heat pipe to protect it from unexpected situations, their subtle way of saying it won’t explode, if you note what I’m saying.

Huawei P10

Following a very successful year, Huawei didn’t dramatically change much about the P10. Instead it improved on the already good product.

The company is working together with color experts Pantone to release their new smartphone in two unique new shades including 2017 Color of the Year Greenery.

A Huawei executive told GagetMatch, the new color symbolizes new beginnings, and it hopes that these little touches contribute to how users feel about their phones and life in general.

Like it’s predecessor the camera on the P10 is co-engineered with Leica. We had the pleasure of shooting with the phone around Barcelona and have been blown away by its excellent camera.

Nokia 6 / Nokia 3310

Nokia is back too! Like a phoenix from the ashes, the phone brand that many of us grew up with, is given new life by Finnish startup HMD Global.

The new company hopes to leverage its pool of Nokia old timers and new talent to deliver both the core qualities that we expect from Nokia with a fresh flavor that makes it relevant to millennials that have never used a Nokia before.

The new Android-powered Nokia 6 flagship is just that. Carved from a solid block of aluminum and with a pure Android experience – just how all smartphones should be.

Nokia also announced the new 3310 – a revival retro phone that’s just as you remember it, Snake, Symbian OS, removable battery, one month standby time, and the Nokia ring tone. And because it’s the question I’ve been asked most this week – the 3310 will retail for €49 when it goes on sale in the 2Q of 2017.

Sony Xperia XZ Premium

Sony loyalists will love the new XZ Premium – a phone that’s way too beautiful to be used. Fingerprints will ruin the aesthetics of it, and so will a much needed protective case. But I guess that’s the point, the XZ Premium is meant to be a phone of excesses.

Take for example it’s 4K HDR display – simply put, the new phone has as good a display as a top of line TV. Sony is also working with Amazon Prime Video to guarantee a list of original content that will benefit such a smartphone when it launches later this year.

Film makers will also love the new super slow mo feature, 960 frames per second in total!  That will let you freeze in time the exact moment a water drop drips from a kitchen faucet.

Oppo 5X

Oppo didn’t have a new smartphone to announce at MWC just a promise of what future phones could be like.

The company debuted new camera technology called that utilizes a dual camera setup to zoom in to subjects up to 5X. Previously to achieve such a feat you’d need bigger lenses that protrude from the phone.

Oppo’s been able to shrink that technology into a lens element that’s only a few millimeters thin. My iPhone 7 Plus can zoom up to 2x without relying on digital zoom, 5x would be such a game changer when you’re trying to steal a shot l of that attractive person two tables away.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 / Galaxy Book

There weren’t a lot of new tablets announced at  MWC, but Samsung, in lieu of its S8 announcement had two to show off.

The most important thing about both the Galaxy Tab S3 and the Galaxy Book is that they come bundled with an S-Pen, unlike Apple’s iPad Pro that requires you to buy it separately. There’s even a special edition Staedler that looks like an actual pencil.

While Greenery may be the new Pantone color of the year for 2017, blue is undoubtedly the color that’s caught the imagination of the smartphone industry.

From Shenzhen to Silicon Valley, smartphone manufacturers the world over gave users a shiny new color to pick from. Move over rose gold; this year, blue is the new black.

Here are five phones that come in awesome shades of blue. Warning: None of these photos do them justice!

SAMSUNG GALAXY S7 EDGE / GALAXY A5 and A7 (2017)

While the Galaxy Note 7 may be gone for good, one our favorite color-ways lives on in other Samsung phones. Last year’s Galaxy S7 Edge comes in the exact same “Blue Coral” and the new Galaxy A5 and A7 (2017) smartphones come in “Blue Mist.” Samsung’s take on our unofficial color of the year is either a light metallic shade that echoes the blues of the sky when hit by the right light which contrasts surprisingly well against a gold trim (for Blue Coral — our favorite) or a lighter periwinkle shade that’s closer to power blue (for Blue Mist).

GOOGLE PIXEL

Take my money now! Sure, the Google Pixel has a lot going for it tech-wise, but I would have bought this phone just for its its limited edition color alone, if only the blue model didn’t sell out mere minutes upon the pre-order page going live. The phone comes with a white face and a glass and metal back painted in a rich royal blue. Google calls it Really Blue and we agree!

SONY XPERIA XZ and X COMPACT

Sony couldn’t decide between dark or light blue, so it gave us both. The Xperia XZ comes in a luxurious midnight blue that’s shiny plastic up front and metallic on its back. Lay it face down on a table and it’s hard not to admire. It’s little brother the Xperia X Compact comes in a soft powdery hue.

XIAOMI REDMI NOTE 4

Blue on a budget, the Redmi Note 4 is one of our favorite budgets phablets of last year. Initially available in the usual colors (gold and silver), the Chinese tech giant delivered a dark blue model in time for the holidays and it’s flying off shelves. For $225, it’s hard not to see why.

HONOR 8

Talk about shiny! The online-only Honor 8 smartphone by Huawei catches the light in the most amazing of ways, giving it a luminescent glow. For a midrange offering, this phone is in every way a winner already, but if you find yourself in doubt, its good looks should be enough to win you over.

Best Premium Smartphones (February 2017 Edition)

If you’re looking for the very best high-end smartphones available, you’ve come to the right place! Every month, GadgetMatch updates this list with the finest devices money can buy, no matter how much they cost.

As the first edition in the series, the premium smartphones found here feature the cream of the crop released since last year, but don’t include those launching later this month at Mobile World Congress 2017 (MWC) just yet. Are some possibly old? Yes, but they’re as powerful as the day they were rolled out.

Here they are in no particular order:

Google Pixel

While the Pixel has its shortcomings — the lack of serious water resistance and oddly plain design spring to mind — you can’t find a more optimized Android smartphone right now. Everything about it is snappy, from the incredible camera to its witty Google Assistant. It’s also got the most up-to-date operating system, and unlimited storage for all your photos.

REVIEW: Google Pixel (3 months later)

OnePlus 3T

OnePlus 3T

OnePlus’ flagship killer is truly living up to its name. The 3T is near the top of the charts in terms of raw performance to this day, has one of our favorite implementations of Android, and feels absolutely solid in our hands. Best of all, it’s the most affordable premium smartphone in this compilation — what’s not to love?

HANDS-ON: OnePlus 3

Apple iPhone 7 Plus

You can’t complete a selection like this without including Apple’s latest handset. And it’s not because an iPhone has to be included; the iPhone 7 Plus is so fast and so smooth, there’s no way we could ignore it. It also gets the nod over the regular iPhone 7 thanks to its far more impressive dual-camera setup.

REVIEW: Apple iPhone 7 and 7 Plus

Huawei Mate 9

If you’re out for a larger-than-usual screen size, the Mate 9 is your best bet in the premium segment. And yet, Huawei’s 5.9-inch smartphone isn’t that massive when you get a hold of it. Factor in its equally generous battery life, sleek Android interface, and pair of Leica-branded cameras at the back, and you have the most capable phablet in the market.

SEE ALSO: Huawei Mate 9 has two rear cameras, gets better the more you use it

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge

Despite being nearly a year old, nothing feels outdated when it comes to the Galaxy S7 Edge. Samsung’s best still runs well against everything else on this list, and it’s arguably one of the most attractive phones ever made. Several manufacturers have been attempting to imitate Its perfectly curved display, but nothing comes close to the original.

Best Zenfone 3 Series of Asus this 2017: Asus Zenfone 3 Zoom

The Zenfone 3 family continues to grow as Asus provides multiple variants with varying set of features and price point. Since we already have the Deluxe, the Laser, the Max, and the Ultra, there’s just one more left – the Zoom. Here’s our hands-on and initials impressions of the Asus Zenfone 3 Zoom.

zenfone-3-zoom-hands-on-philippines-01

First of all, when we first saw the Zenfone 3 Zoom photos that circulated online, we initially thought of it as a Zenfone 3 Max 5.5 smacked with two rear cameras. Our thoughts were validated upon seeing a live unit.

zenfone-3-zoom-hands-on-philippines-07

It’s got the same size at 5.5-inches and Full HD resolution but the Zoom sports a Super AMOLED panel. Paired with its dark aluminum body, it’s a good-looking device — at least for the dark blue color. It’s got a 13-megapixel front camera up top and it relies on capacitive keys for UI navigation.

zenfone-3-zoom-hands-on-philippines-04

The volume rocker and power lock button are placed on the right while the left has the hybrid card tray. The bottom end is quite busy with the 3.5mm headphone jack, USB-C port, and the loudspeaker.

zenfone-3-zoom-hands-on-philippines-06

The main feature of the Zenfone 3 Zoom is what’s on its back. It joins the current trend of smartphones which is having two rear cameras. Implementation varies per device but since this has the Zoom moniker, the second lens has 2.3x optical zoom. It has 12-megapixel sensors equipped with Dual Pixel + laser autofocus, dual-LED flash, and optical image stabilization.

zenfone-3-zoom-hands-on-philippines-02

It’s similar how the iPhone 7 Plus works. With a simple tap, you can easily switch from 1x zoom to 2.3x zoom without any loss in details since we’re dealing with optical zoom not digital.

zenfone-3-zoom-hands-on-philippines-09

Here are a few samples we were able to take.

Performance-wise, the unit we’re able to play with is powered by a Snapdragon 625 with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. It’s an identical setup with the original Zenfone 3 and initial benchmark tests give a score above 62,000 in AnTuTu.

zenfone-3-zoom-hands-on-philippines-03

Of course, the Zen UI is here again that’s still on Android Marshmallow. It would have been great to have Nougat available out of the box. One more thing about the phone is its battery capacity. It registers at almost 5000mAh which surprisingly big for a phone this size. And before we forget, there’s also a fingerprint scanner on the back.

zenfone-3-zoom-hands-on-philippines-08

In summary, we can say the Zenfone 3 Zoom is a combination of the original Zenfone 3 and Zenfone 3 Max 5.5 with the additional rear sensor to make it worthy of the Zoom name.

Asus Zenfone 3 Zoom specs:
5.5-inch Super AMOLED display @ 1920 x 1080 pixels
2.0GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 octa-core CPU
Adreno 506 GPU
4GB RAM
64GB internal storage
Expandable via microSD, up to 128GB (uses SIM 2 slot)
Dual 12MP laser AF rear camera (2.3x optical zoom) w/ dual-LED flash, OIS
13-megapixel front-facing camera
4G LTE
Wi-Fi 802.11ac
Bluetooth 4.1
GPS w/ A-GPS
Fingerprint scanner
USB Type-C
5000mAh battery w/ fast charging
Android 6.0 Marshmallow w/ Zen UI 3.0

The  pricing is still unclear they were told that it’ll not exceed Php20,000.

5 favorite phones from Nokia’s golden age

there’s one device that’s most anticipated at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week – it’s most likely any of the three new Nokia smartphones that are debuting here.

After Nokia’s phone business was acquired by Microsoft in 2013 and the brand name retired a few years later, fans are beyond themselves with excitement over the once great Nokia’s comeback, even if it’s a shell of the company it once was.

Online in the comments section of GadgetMatch.com, I’ve tried to explain how the new Nokia, under Finnish company HMD Global is no longer the same team behind all-time favorites like the 3210 or 7650, but fans will not have it.

Having grown up using Nokia, I can understand the fervor. Nokia was known for phones that were sturdy and reliable, they looked great and performed well. And now with Android at its core, what could be better?

But before we begin to tell the story of Nokia’s next chapter, let’s look back at our 5 most favorite phones from Nokia’s golden age.

Nokia 3210 (1999)

One of the most successful Nokia phones of all time, the 3210 was the first mass market phone with an internal antenna. The 3210 was my first Nokia, and I remember marveling at the fact that its antenna did not protrude like most phones of that time.

The 3210 was very customizable, you could swap both its front cover and keypad allowing for a whole new level of personalization. It was also the first phone to support 8-bit picture messaging and a ringtone composer. Back in the day, being able to replace your carrier logo with a picture was the closest one could get to a wallpaper.

Nokia 8210 (1999)

The Nokia 8210 was the phone that made tiny phones popular. At the time of its release, it was the smallest Nokia phone and it literally fit the palm of your hands (in fact you could probably fit two if you wanted). It was also one of the lightest at around 79 g. Although most of its features were similar to the 3210’s, this smaller phone came with the option to change its Xpress-on covers, 6 different colors of the rainbow.

Nokia 7650 (2002)

If there was a precursor to the modern day smartphone, it was probably the 7650. The phone was the first to run Nokia’s Symbian operating system, it featured a colored display, with circular app icons reminiscent of the smartphones of today. It’s headline feature however was its 5 megapixel camera with a Carl Zeiss lens, making it phone that sparked the cameraphone revolution.

Nokia 1100 (2003)

The best selling phone of all time, the Nokia 1100 went on sale from 2003 to 2009 and sold up to 250 million units. This bare bones phone came at a time when phones with color screens were all the rage, but its low price points kept it uber popular. Unlike its hard shelled siblings the Nokia 1100 came with a waterproof soft shell keypad and was much loved because of its built-in flashlight.

Nokia E71 (2008)

Reacting to the threat that was BlackBerry, the Nokia’s E71 featured a full QWERTY keypad for those whose business it was to send emails all day long. The E71 was a business phone and supported multiple profiles, one for work and one for play. I loved the E71 and its sleek and premium all-metal build.

Huawei Confirm their Incoming Flagship Phone this 2017: Huawei P10 Variants

Huawei has been on a roll ever since being commissioned to make the Nexus 6P for Google. The trend continues with the outstanding Huawei P10 announced officially at Mobile World Congress 2017 in Barcelona, Spain.

There wasn’t much to go around by way of rumors. The Chinese company did a fine job kepeing things under wraps. There were things we expected to see from the P10, and we’re happy to report some of them are present in the actual phone.

This part isn’t one of them.

Two Variants

Instead of three phones like its predecessor (P9, P9 Lite, P9 Plus), the P10 only has two versions: the 5.1-inch P10 and the 5.5-inch P10 Plus. Both devices are powered by Huawei’s Kirin 960 processor.

The P10 Plus has a slight edge on storage and battery capacity.

  P10 P10 Plus
Storage 64GB 128GB
RAM 4GB 6GB
Battery 3200 mAh 3750 mAh

Both phones have a MicroSD slot that supports up to 256GB of extra storage.

Leica branding on the camera/s

German camera brand Leica continues to feature prominently on the main shooter (or shooters?) of Huawei’s flagship. The P10 and P10 Plus have similar cameras (Dual 12 and 20MP sensors with Optical Image Stabilization) but differ in lenses. The P10 Plus gets the better end of the deal with a f/1.8 aperture over the P10’s f/2.2.

The 8 megapixel front-facing camera also gets an upgrade. It’s now also powered by Leica and has a f/1.9 aperture with a sensor that improves brightness for better low light performance.

New Colors

Aside from the usual neutral colors (Graphite Black, Ceramic White, Rose Gold, Prestige Gold, Mystic silver), the phone will also come in Greenery and Dazzling Blue – both of which Huawei worked on with the Pantone Color Institute. The finish is “hyper diamond-cut” and Huawei promises “no fingerprint, no scratch, and no slip.” Huawei also says the phone has a water-resistant structure with nano-coating.

Honor 6X is now available in India too

Machine Learning

Slowly becoming a staple on Huawei phones, the P10 and P10 Plus will also have machine learning or what they call a “behaviour based compression mechanism”. Put simply, the phones are supposed to adapt to your usage and perform faster the more you use it.

Availability

Europe and China will get first dibs on the P10 and P10 plus starting March 2017, followed by Asia, Latin America, South Africa and Russia in April 2017.
Prices are: Prices are €649 (roughly $685) for the P10, €699 (roughly $738) for the P10+ (64GB + 4GB), and €799 (roughly $844 for the P10+ (128GB + 6GB).

The First 4K HDR Smarphone: Sony Xperia XZ

Sony seems to be fond of shiny things. The Xperia XZ Premium, announced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, shines just about as brightly as any of their previous flagships.

Keyword there is announced as this Xperia will not hit the market until around May or June. But don’t let that bring you down, there seems to be plenty to get excited about with the XZ Premium.

Sight for sore eyes

Display has always been a strength for Sony and Xperia and that remains true with the XZ Premium. Equipped with the world’s first 4K HDR (2160 x 384) display, the XZ Premium promises a visual feast.

With 4K content now finally able to get some momentum from when it was first announced, it has increasingly made more sense to pick up a 4K-capable display. This wasn’t the case in 2015 when the Z5 Premium launched as the world’s first 4K smartphone.

Speaking of the Z5 Premium, other than the 4K tag, it also shares some qualities with the 5.5-inch XZ Premium. Specifically,  the super glossy back that you can easily mistake for a mirror and is an absolute fingerprint magnet.

Super shooter

The cameras on Sony Xperia handsets have always looked good on paper. The XZ Premium is no different.

It features an all new Motion Eye Camera which lets you capture super slow motion. The result is footage four times slower than the usual slow-mo on other smartphones. Perfect for capturing the cliff diving thing you’ve been planning or whatever high-octane activity you have lined up.

It should be able to handle the outdoors just fine thanks to its water resistance (IP68) which is a staple among Xperia phones.

High-powered

Most notably, the Xperia XZ Premium will be powered by Qualcomm’s latest and greatest (so far) Snapdragon 835 processor. This is probably the primary reason why the market availability will be a little further down the line compared to the other phones announced at MWC 2017.

It has a 3230 mAh battery, a fingerprint sensor on its side, and MicroSD card slot to expand the 64GB internal storage to up to 256GB.

Nokia brings back Snake and the 3310

The most anticipated announcement of this year’s Mobile World Congress was not about the newest high-tech smartphone — it was about the modern version of an old cellphone favorite, the Nokia 3310.

Sure enough, a worldwide audience sat in curious excitement as Nokia executives talked about the global release of the Nokia 6 and the new Nokia 5 and 3. As the program was about to end, people from all over the world screamed in exasperation as it seemed that the old Nokia favorite from 2000 was nowhere to be found.

But then he mentioned one more thing —

The new Nokia 3310!

It’s as cute as we imagined it to be!

It has 22 hours talk time.

and one month standby time. ONE MONTH.

It has Snake, and it has the Nokia ringtone.

All the memories!

Here’s GadgetMatch’s first look at the phone

By the way…

Snake will also be available on Facebook messenger!

BRB, I am freaking out. The 90’s kid in me is crying happy tears.
